Dimension-Internet Gateway

Question

Hello everyone: I have searched and searched for an answer and cannot find anything pertaining to this issue.  I contacted Dell, the first tech said he'd call back and he didn't the second tech told me he had no idea.  Win XP is the operating system.   Here's the situation:   We have a Dell Server, brand new.  We have two new Dell computers and three that were bought at a local computer store (they are built). The DSL modem is connected to SMC16 port unmanaged switch.  The server and two of our older computers connected immediately - no problems.  The other three, including the two newer Dells would not access the Internet.  They will access the server (file print server) but no Internet.   All computers were able to access the Internet prior.   Took the cable and plugged it directly into the port that the working computer uses.  Unable to connect to the Internet. Checked all the configurations, IP addressess, etc. Found the common problem was that the working computers had a Gateway IP the nonworking computers did not. Found a solution - this will sound a little crazy but it worked.    Network connections - under tcp/ip entered IP addresses manually, including Gateway IP. Closed the properties button.  No Internet access.  Went back into properties and checked the Obtain IP address automatically. Closed Properties.  Internet Gateway symbol appears above the LAN and the Internet works.    I also turned off the Windows Fireway and we have not put the firewall onto the server yet.    Sounds good, computers are able to access Internet. Here's the problem: Whenever the computer is rebooted or shut down and restarted, it will not access the Internet and the same steps above have to be entered.    I have tried the winsock program that flushes it, I have removed the ethernet card and rebooted, I have done the ipconfig /flush /renew.  It seems that something in the computer is not allowing this to be saved but I'm not sure what else to do. Even if I leave it in the add gateway address, it is reset after reboot.   I have asked a few other Network administrator's there opinion but have no clue......can any help with this?  It will be greatly appreciated....:smileytongue:

The configuration setup was a little hard to follow, at least for me, so let me see if I get this right.

DSL Modem>Switch>Server and Desktops, right? Where the DHCP coming from? Is the modem also a router?

Perosnally I would use a managed switch, but go with what you have. Right now, I would just give everything a fixed IP Address with the gateway being the address of the modem/router and DNS is availbale from the ipconfig /all command.

Sorry for the set-up, I didn't do the setup. It was believed that it was better to access the Internet directly through the DSL modem. I believe that it is also acting as the router. The DSL is plugged into the unmanaged switch and the computers are accessing the Internet directly through this. It is working for most of the computers just three of them or unable to access the Internet. They can access everything else on the network but that.

The PC's were given assigned IP addresses, it was changed to see if this would allow the computers to access the Internet.

The unnmanaged switch was put in when they first got the system (years ago).
