The direct connection, for some reason, is one of the most difficult things to accomplish and has not gotten better over the years. Back in the days when I used to use this ancient technology, it only seemed to work on odd numbered Thursdays and then only if I was wearing the right colored shirt and had my hair parted on the left side. You might want to try the following sites and see if it can give you some pointers on how to get this working, but with network cards now costing less than $10, you might find it easier to just install a network card in any computer that doesn't have one and connecting the network cards together with a cross-over cable.
