DO I HAVE A BUG ?. HELP!!
My modem suddenly only connects at either 28kbps or 31.2kbps.- no matter what i do. it used to connect at 44-45kbps. isuspect i have a virus or malicious script running.Norten doesnt find anything, and its up to date. Yet !!!when i run the modem diagnostics program, eventuallyhalfway into it,a norten alert screen pops up sying it has detected malicuos script etc. norten then blocks that program from ever running again!!.. i have tried all the obvious like reinstalling the driver,REFORMATTING THE HARD DRIVE. but the problem returned as usual.i also noted that listening to the modem as it is connecting, it takes 3 times as long and you can actually hear it going through the same stages 3 times in a row befor it finnally connects.very annoying as well.but hopefully all this detail will give somebody a clue whats wrong. i first noticed the problem after i had tried downloading an updated modem driver for the modem. but it never appered to have installed? did i download a virus! if so how come norten doesnt fix it.How do i wipe everything and start againwithout it coming back...does anyone have any ideas whats going on. im running XP.

jo900,
This problem does not sound like a virus. The information you give that your modem goes through the noises 3 times before connecting is a clue that points to a noisy phone line. Call the Dell Techies for assistance in testing your "signal to noise" ratio. If the number is less than 40, then you have too much noise on your phone line for a good, high speed connection.
