Do I need a Modem?

I have a Dell Latitude. And, I noticed that the place where the PC Card needs to go is empty. Does this mean that I need a modem?? And, if so, what model do I need to but? And, where from? I want access to the internet (usng my regular phone line), and I assume I can NOT do this without a modem?

Thanks.

James

Are you sure you don't have a modem?  Which model Latitude do you have?  Information like this is essential whenever you ask a question on this forum.

It is highly unlikely that a phone connection would require a PC card this day and age. Look all around the perimeter (thin edge) of the latitude for a small opening that accepts a standard RJ-11 phone cable.
Also, go to Device Manager and click + to expand Modem and see what the brand and model numbers are.
For example, Broadcom or 3M or something like that.

Thanks for your help, I will do this. I have a question: how do I get to "device manager"? And, once there, do I need to do anything? You understand just how computer illiterate I am now, don't you??!!

RIGHT-click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'
On that screen look for a [hardware] button to get to Device Manager. The subsequent screen uses the metaphor of an outline. Where you see + you can click the sign and it will expand the collapsed entries to the right.
When you see Modem and click + then it will open where you can read what it is (and jot it down).
Then RIGHT-click on the name/picture of that device and this time select 'Delete' and if it asks 'Are you sure' answer with confidence, yes I am sure. Then finish and exit everything and do a shutdown | restart to give the system a new chance to discover the modem and make it to be in working order. This is something Windows is happy to do each time you start a computer.

Hi.....and thanks. I did what you said, but I do NOT see Modem. I see a lot of other stuff, like, Floppy disk controllers, keyboards, system devices, etc, etc.

I went in and opened ALL of what I saw, but Modem is NOT listed.

What do you think I need to do now?

Please advise.

Thanks very much!

the modems were apparently optional on those models:

Modem Data/Fax Modem Optional 3Com 56K, V.90 Mini PCI Modem 556B. For more information, see the online documentation for the modem. Data/Fax and NIC Combination Modem Optional 3Com 10/100 LAN + 56K, V.90 Mini PCI Modem. For more information, see the online documentation for the modem.

Thanks for the info! Does this mean that I will need to go and buy one before I can use the internet on dial up? If so, where? And, what model?

Any help would be appreciated. I am completely computer illeterate!

James.

if you don't see a modem jack anywhere on your laptop, I would simply buy a pc-card modem

if there's a phone jack on it then that would presumably be your modem?  or when you referred to your pc were you not talking about the notebook?

I have a jack for a phoneline on my PC - is that what you mean?

If it is NOT what yo mean, and I still need to buy a PC Card Modem, then which model do I buy? And where can I get one from? Remember, I have a Latitude C600/C500, model PP01L.

Thanks!

I was referring to my notebook. So, that said, the phone-jack would be the modem? I only ask this, because the place where you insert the PC Card is empty - I always thought that the modem would be there, if anywhere......let me know what you think.......and what I need to do.........thanks!

no, the pc-card slot is for any type of expansion card.  if there is already a modem jack on the notebook, then the modem is built into the computer.

Unless the poster is confusing a network socket with a phone jack? Does the "phone jack" have a symbol like this ? - if so, it's a networking cable socket and not a phone jack.
