To regain wireless capability for my laptop, do I need to install a wireless adapter (usb) on the desktop?  No, installing a wireless adapter on the desktop would only give your desktop wireless capability.  Does the wireless adapter on the laptop not work?  Your laptop should get wireless through the router unless the router was also blown out by the lightning strike.
