Do I need an adapter or card?

Can someone answer a simple question for a simple fella! I wish to connect my Dimension 5150 to my Inspiron 6000. I have orded a wireless modem router for starters. I know the laptop is WiFi, my question is do I require an adapter or card for the Dimension or is this inbuilt? I got both of these only 3 month ago & they are running XP home. I know I dont have much chance of completing this task, but at leased its a start...... Cheers!

Both systems will have an ethernet card. The laptop doubtless has a wireless card.

You could connect your desktop to the router with ethernet and your laptop with wireless. If you want wireless connection to your desktop, you will need to install a wireless card in it.

Thanks for your quick reply, when you say the laptop..... "doubtless it has a wireless card"........When I eject the card draw it only has the Dell blank plate. Dose this mean I need a wireless card & is it called a LAN card? Many thanks.

I don't know about your particular model or what options you chose when ordering it.
Go here: http://support.dell.com/support/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
Put in your service tag and select 'Original System Configuration' to see what is installed in your system.

Hello Jerry if your still about, I have checked what you advised and my laptop has a Broardcom 440x 10/100 intergrated controller & an Intel (R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection. Do you think I will be ok, or need another card? I am learning.....Honest. Thanks!

The Intel 2200bg is a wireless card. I have an Intel 2915abg. So I can say the Intel cards are poor choices for wireless connection.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for the Intel card and you may be OK.
