First, make sure it is an Intel Pro 10/100. If it is then these drivers should work

Genius in disguise,

There may be a "chipset driver" needed for whatever Dimension model/OS you're working on. Those must be installed before devices integrated on the motherboard will be recognized.

If one's needed, it will be listed in the "Chipset" section under "Product Support/Drivers & Downloads"

I did re-install the chipset drivers... still no luck.

Is it possible that my nic card has gone bad?

Thanks,

Would the chipset drivers affect any of the other drivers?  I had to re-install four drivers, including the video controller, SM bus controller, and Multimedia audio controller also, and I didn't have problems with any of them.

Genius in disguise,

Which Dimension model do you have? Am I correct that you're trying to reinstall Windows XP? Have you checked Dell's "Reinstall Guide" for your system (see Product Support/Reinstall Guide) for instructions?

Jim,
It's a Dimension 4600, and I'm re-installing Windows XP Home.  No, I haven't checked the "Reinstall Guide" yet, but I will give it a look.  Someone else told me that XP Home is known for problems with Ethernet Controllers... I was going to try re-installing the NIC card tomorrow to see if that would resolve the problem.
Thanks!

Laura,

The XP Reinstall Guide for the 4600 will help you determine what devices are installed on your system. The section entitled " Install Hardware Drivers" shows the order the drivers need to be installed.  Once you've identified the ones you need, you can use the list of available XP downloads for the 4600 to download the ones you need.

You'll definitely need the " Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility" installed before the integrated Ethernet device will be recognized. The Ethernet device is the " Intel 10/100 LOM".

:smileyhappy:

Jim,

I installed a new NIC card... problem solved.  I simply disabled the old device.  Thanks for all of your help.  I have definitely learned more about this topic than I ever thought I would need to know!

Have a great day,

Laura
