DSL and being hacked

Hi,

I am hoping someone could help me with this.  I should mention that I am completely computer illiterate as is almost everyone I know.

I have SBC/Yahoo DSL and I use Zone Alarm as a firewall.  I wanted to know my computers vunerability of being hacked at certain times.  For example, could it be hacked if:

1.  My computer is completely shut down and the modem is off?

2.  My computer is completely shut down, but I leave the modem on.  I guess I am more concerned about this one as my thinking is is that the modem still has a conection, but my firewall is off because my system is shut down.

If anyone has any advise it would be greatly appreciated.

Nobody can hack a turn off computer. For hack a computer generally the hacker must access your hard drive, but if you compuer is off, the hard drive is off also.

By the way if you have an internal modem and your computer is off, the modem is off too.you can still connect a phone to your computer and speak by phone, but the modem is off.

If you have and external modem(Dial up, DSL,cable) and the computer is off, there is not communication between the PC and the external modem so nobady can hack your PC. The only danger  that you shoud worry about is the changes in the electrical voltages. I recommend a good surge protector with telephone and network protection and if is possible a battery. I also recommend a good antivirus.

Thank you so much for the information.  Logically, I thought that would be the case, but I wanted to be sure.  You can never be too careful.  Thanks again!
