DSL Connection Problem

Question

After a storm last night (which dimmed the lights but didn't knock out the power), checked my computer to find that my IM had disconnected and I could reach the web. My initial assumption was that the internet was knocked out (and the internet light on the dsl modem was not lit). However, after powering the modem off and on, and restarting the computer (and connecting the computer directly to the modem, rather than thru the router), I found that I could log into the modem, and that from the modem interface I could ping websites (www.google.com), but I still could not reach the internet. Is it still possible that the internet is knocked out (there was an alert on the tech line) to the point that I can only ping (not surf), or should I suspect that there is some sort of configuration problem, caused maybe by a forced reset from the storm or something of that nature? I would appreciate suggestions on further diagnosing the problem. Dimension 4300, Win XP Home... obviously I'm not connected from home, so those are all the technical details I can recite from memory at the moment. Thanks in advance. Dave

Yup! Connection seems to have been repaired before I got the chance to follow up significantly. I was able to test it with a laptop and found that it was generally unresponsive, although for some reason I was able to initially connect to my homepage (temporary connectivity!). Things seem to be fine now, and I can read the news reports on the AP wire about my city's pummeling at the hands of the weather.

My call to tech support suggested that I should reset my password, and that I had logged in incorrectly (?). I actually had to give the "don't care, skip this answer" response to get to the alert noting that local connectivity was impared. Go figure.
