Why do you use standby?  Check the Power Management settings to see if the deivce is being allowed to be turned off?

I use standby if I will be away for a period of time and don't want to shut down my computer and then turn it back on (i.e. maybe 1 hour or more). I checked the power management and the system standby is on never.

You looked in the wrong place.  The Power mGt tab is on the properties section of the NIC.  Be default, it is set to allow the nIC to turn off to save power.  A lot of goofy things can happen when you go to standby and hibernate.

It's either that setting or your "Keep Connection Alive" setting on the modem setup page.  Set it to "0" to always keep the connection alive.

I am having exaclty the same problem with dsl.  I thought perhaps I installed something wrong so I had the telephone company come out and install it again for me and it still does the same thing... I lose the connection after I am idle for a while.  I was just getting ready to post my question when I read this post.   I have Windows XP.  Where do I find thge mgt tab in the NIC.  However I do not set my computer to either standby or hibernate.  I would like to check this setting on my computer if you could instruct me how to find this... thanks.  :)

Edited to add I have a Dimension 8400

Ok, I think I found what the others were talking about ( I myself am computer illiterate, so I am not sure what NIC is). anyway, if you go to control panel, go to phone and modems, open that, go to modems tab and hit oproperties, there are more tabs, go to power management and there is a box that was unchecked that stated something to the effect of Allow this device to bring the computer out of stanby. I have no idea if this will work, but I will check and let you all know. Did any of you download norton virus lately? that is all that I can correlate it w/. glad to know i am not the only one w/these problems!

Thanks for your reply.  I found the power management tab with your help  and found that mine was already checked so I still have the problem.  Let me know if you come up with any other solutions... thanks!  :smileyhappy:

Wait a minute...how many thread are going on here?

I think that changing the power management setting described above worked. I seem to not have problems today, but who knows. I would try turning it off, restarting your computer and then turning that setting on again to see if that helps. hopefully that will work.
