DSL Device Installation Problem

(I am posting this using my PC. The DSL modem I use for the PC is the same modem I am attempting to connect to my Inspiron so I know the modem itself is functional. I am going to attempt to provide as much information as possible concerning my problem. Some info may be irrelevant, but I don't want to skip anything.)

System Information:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 1
Dell Inspiron 5100 Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
2.39 GHz
512 MB of RAM
Modem: Westell Wirespeed
ISP: BellSouth FastAcess DSL

I am trying to set up a DSL connection on my laptop. I am using the BellSouth Installation CD. All minimum requirements checked out. Everything went smoothly until it was time to do the "DSL Device Installation."

When prompted, I connected the Ethernet cable from the modem to the laptop, and a screen came up with the following:

"Installation Wizard has identified more than one network adaptor on your computer. If you are installing your DSL modem using an Ethernet connection, please select your Ethernet Adaptor."

The two network adaptors for my laptop listed are:

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller

1394 Net Adaptor

I highlighted the Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller and clicked next. There is a list of things the computer checks for: Detecting DSL Device, Detecting Connection Type, Ping Test, DNS Test, and TCP/IP Test. The only one with a "check" is Detecting DSL Device.

The next message read "BellSouth installation wizard was not able to connect to the Internet. Please make sure your DSL device is configured and connected properly and that you correctly entered your User ID and Password."

I am CERTAIN the User ID and password is correct. (The same one we used for setting up the PC.) As far as the DSL device being configured properly, it works for my PC and my PlayStation 2 so I am assuming it's configured properly.

I am able to connect to dial-up, but I want to (obviously) use the DSL connection. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Naomie

Try powering off the DSL modem, then back on, when the notebook is attached.

Thanks for the quick reply, but that did not work. Can you suggest anything else?

Aloha Naomie,

Have you tried configuring your connection manually?

Bellsouth has instructions on manually configuring their DSL:
Windows® XP: How do I set up FastAccess DSL? ("click here")

Windows® XP: How do I create a FastAccess DSL connection? ("click here")

Windows® XP: How do I verify a network configuration? ("click here")

You probably have a hardcopy of this... but I'll link to it anyway ("Westell_Connection.pdf" Guide).

Hope that's what you'll need...

Aloha,
Rod

I have corrected the problem using BellSouth Technical Phone Support. In the last 3 years, I have had nothing but headaches dealing with their support staff but tonight the woman was very knowledgeable and was obviously not reading from a troubleshooting manual.

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to respond in a quick and courteous fashion.

Regards,

Naomie
