DSL modem and NIC

I've just installed a DSL modem on a Dimension 4100 via USB as this computer has no NIC. I will install one, as the telco says that is the preferred way. My question; is the connection faster with ethernet as opposed to USB? Thanks

I don't know that it will be faster, but the 4100 only has USB 1.1 and that is a slow interface.  If you had USB 2.0 then it would be a toss up as far as speed as USB 2.0 is 12 Mb/sec.

However, by using an Ethernet "NIC" card and interface you don't tie up a USB port (and don't use any of the total USB port power available for USB connected devices) and you don't need any special drivers or software for the NIC port like you do with USB.  The Ethernet port is designed for data communications, the USB ports were designed for peripheral equipment (e.g. printers, scanners, etc).

Telco is correct, the Ethernet is the "preferred" connection.
