Rick, thanks for responding. Maybe I didn't understand the suggestions but they all refer to wireless issues. I have no router or wireless connections. After many disconnect problems a Centurytel [my ISP] tech came to the house and replaced the DSL/phone wall jack. There was some dust or corrosion in the jack and everything seemed OK after it's replacement. That was several weeks ago. Nevertheless, every week or so the connection drops and usuually reestablishes after a reboot of both the CPU and the modem.

I could call Dell and pay for tech support but since I'm contemplating replacing both the CPU and monitor I'm reluctant to run up the bill.

DSL Vendors will time you out if you are idle.

Thats why you use a Linksys BEFSR41 to "keep alive" the connection.

arnnad,

Follow these instructions and when you're there in network, you should see your ethernet connection. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

What happens now?

Rick
