DSL & Wireless troubles

Question

Have some issues here. I got a notebook that i WAS able to get on wireless through my dsl connection. (linksys WRT54G v6 is the router). I installed service pack 2 (XP home), and then that's when i was having issues. I don't know if that has anything to do with it but i thought i would let you know.   What i've done: i have resetted winsock, uninstalled wireless driver rebooted and then let windows automatically reinstall it. It connects just fine if i'm hard-wired directly to the modem. i took it to a friends house who has cable internet. It connects just fine. since it's dsl i thought it might be PPoE. It's NOT. I checked. There's something blocking it from the cable modem to the router. I tried different ethernet cables.   Any ideas? in a way i hope this is a simple fix and in another way i hope it's not so i don't feel stupid haha.   Thanks

if i am correct, you're saying that, you can't connect wirelessly... and you mentioned that you resetted winsock ... which one? LAN or WLAN?

right i can't connect wirelessly. I just resetted winsock using netsh winsock reset catalog in the cmd prompt box. I also uninstalled/reinstalled the wireless driver.

Since you can connect using hardwire connection using the MODEM.. try to get in touch with the GUI of the router...   HOW: 1. hard wire the computer to your linksys router using ethernet cable; you can use LAN 1,2,3,4, ports. 2. goto cmd and check the IP address and default gate way under ethernet adapter by using the command                        ipconfig /all        > if ip address is  NOT 169.x.x.x and default gateway (DG) is 192.168.2.1      > then do this command                        PING 192.168.2.1      > check if you get replies and if you get 0% loss, then it means you can open the gui of the router.   3.   Open up internet explorer and type 192.168.2.1 in the address bar 4.   It should ask you for the user name and pw (a pop up box) 5.  the default is blank user id and the password is 'admin' 6.  then you can configure the WIRELESS from that end.

Alright i have figured out what's going on with the dsl wireless. After much much searching the internet i finally found out what's going on.

So the DSL modem, when i'm connected to it hardwired, gives an ip address of 192.168.1.254. Yes i know that's a weird ip but that's what it was. So the issue is i'm using a linksys router and if you don't know linksys' default IP address is 192.168.1.1. well since the DSL modem is 192.168.1.x and linksys is 192.168.1.x they were conflicting with each other. That 3rd octet needs to be changed on the linksys router so it won't contradict with each other. So i logged into the router and on the first page (setup) i changed local IP address to 192.168.2.1. Kept everything DHCP on computer and router. Now i can connect to the internet wirelessly.

So the short of it is the 3rd octet had to be changed so it wouldn't be conflicting with the DSL modem.
