dumbest question ever asked??

Question

How to connect my laptop to the phone line... got it in the phone line but don't know which spot to plug into the laptop itself.  There seems to be only 2 possibilities...and neither one is a fit!! DUMB!!! What is the thing called that I'm looking for...and maybe I can find it on the technical sketch of the laptop online..??  I can't believe this... I've done it a dozen times... but won't work today!!  Thanks..

The connector you want is thwe RJ11 jack. It is the smaller of the 2. The other 1 is a RJ45, it is for Ethernet (Networking).

Hi!  thanks for trying to help!  Isn't it the little up and down 'plug' ...the only one on the whole back of the laptop that runs paralel??  I KNOW that's where it's supposed to go ( I think...) and there's NO WAY it's gonna fit!!  Makes no sense at all....I just unplugged it from one room and moved it to the kitchen...went to 'connect' again...and it's like someone came in the night and 'zapped' the little plug!!???  Any ideas?  thanks

Not the dumbest post I've seen here. You didn't give your model notebook, but it should look like this one:

Right connector here, it only has 2 gold fingers inside, vs the 8 in the RJ-45 connector.
