Security is set up in the router's setup utility. You should set up a WPA or WPA2 security password. The router's instructions should tell you how. Not sure why you mention a digital phone. That has nothing to do with your network. You don't use dialup at all with a cable modem. The wireless router takes care of your husband's wireless connection with the same wpa password. Vista's help file has some good instructions for setting up a secure network.

thank you so much.  It took me a while to find my original post because of some emergencies over the holidays. sorry.

But I found the router manual with instructions for the utility set up.  I'm not sure I understand all the lingo, but at least I know where to look now. I'm on my way.   thanks!

bgrammy,

To log into your wireless router, try this.

Start, run, type

CMD

hit enter, now type

ipconfig /all     (space between the g and / )

hit enter. Now look for the default gateway. (Should look something like 192.168.1.1) Put the default gateway number into the address bar of your browser(Internet Explorer). Hit enter. It will prompt you for a password. Usernames and passwords vary by manufacturers.

Most routers use

username=admin

password=blank(no words at all) or password, unless you changed this.

I then recommend you use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings.

Thanks to all my replies.  My security is enabled and  with only one little glitch I was also able to setup the laptop to access my network.

Problem solved!   thank you for all your points.

bgrammy,

Thanks for posting back. Could you mark the verify answer(s) that helped you solve your problem, so if someone else searches the forums, they can see what you did to fix your problem(s).

Thanks,

Rick
