Error 1058: Cannot start Service

I have a Dimension 8200 running Win XP Pro that I am networking to a Dimension XPS running Win98.  When attempting to start the server in the Configuration Manager on the XP, I receive the following error:

Error 1058:  This service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled  devices associated with it.

I have checked the box so it will start automatically and made sure it was enabled, but it just won't start.  I have spent hours pouring over several sites trying to find an answer, but to no avail. I also did an XP repair this morning but that didn't work.  Any suggestions?

Exactly which service are you attempting to start? It does not seem necessary to specifically start a service in order to fileshare between a Windows XP and Windows 98 system. See here for additional information.

When I attempt to set up a file to be shared, I receive an error message stating that An error occurred while trying to share this file.  The Server Service was not started.

That's why I am trying to start the Server Service.  I am trying to share files, printers and an internet connections between the XP Pro and the 98SE.  Any suggestions?
