"Error 623"

Just installed Belkin WiFi hardware/software so that I don't have cables trailing from my telephone point to my Dimension 8400 and all is working well except for - When I open Outlook and click on Send/Receive I get "Cannot load dialog.  Error Messge Error 623: The System Could not find the Phone Book Entry for This Connection"

Downloaded instructions from the MS site relating to this problem and it says "Click Start, Control Panel, Network and Network Connections then Network Connections. Right Click on VPN connection..." and this is where I'm lost. In Network Connections I have 2 icons, one for Local Area Connection (network cable unplugged), and one for my Wireless Network Connection (which is connected), and right-clicking on this icon does not show VPN connection.

What am I doing wrong, can anybody help me please?

Are you saying you just converted from dial-up internet access to wireless/dsl or cable modem access, and "all is working" - meaning you can access the internet now?

If the above is correct, then what you have is an Outlook or IE config problem, not a network problem. You might check  IE Tools/Internet Options/Connections Tab and make sure

you don't have Always dial my default connection selected.

I use Outlook, so willing to try and help... I can say the tip you are following with VPN ain't the solution!

I tried to recreate your problem and think I found it, but I use Outlook 2003 and get a different error. What version are you on?

If you are configured in Outlook to use POP, then check your conenction settings for the POP account. Should be LAN

now, not Phone Line. I could give you the exact steps for 2003, if you confirm these questions.

Does this help?

"IE6, Tools, Internet Options, Connections - "Never dial a connection" is checked.

Outlook 2003, Tools, Options, Mailsetup, Dialup "Always use an existing dial-up" is checked. I cannot uncheck this option without selecting another option in this dial-up preference section.

I still have my old dial-up software installed because I'm unsure if my new broadband connection requires some or all of that software to access the web.  My broadband connection is supplied by the same ISP that supplied my dial-up connection.

Ok, you just need to go a little deeper. The dial-up selections on this panel will be ignored once you set it up for LAN instead of Dial-up.

Go back to that panel, then in Send/Recieve check the Send immediately button, then hit the Send/Recieve Options..

Select All Accounts, then hit the Edit button. Here you should see your POP account, select it. Make sure you check the 3 boxes to

include this account in All Accounts, and Send, and Recieve. Also check the box Download complete items including attachments.

Then hit the Account Properties button. Here you can select the CONNECTION Tab.

HERE I suspect you need to select the radio button to use LAN instead of Dial using a phone line. This setting was probably left

over from when you were using dial-up. Ok & Close your way back home, then hit Send/Recieve and see what happens.

If this isn't the problem, then I be scratching my head...but come back and we'll fix it!

Good luck,

cc

I have a dial-up connection and I am getting the 'Error 623' message. I have read the previous postings, but I still can't get a handle on the solution. Any help would be very welcome.

Chartwell

I'm still confused even after reading the info received from my previous postings so you're not alone.

Gee guys, I'd like to help, but you could be a little more specific.

Helstonian,

Maybe you could answer my previous queries. All this worked before you switched from dial-up, right? What version of Outlook are you using? You are trying to connect to a POP(3) mail service, right?
Now when you say you are confused, tell me, where did you get lost? how far did you get? what exactly in my previous detail instructions did not make sense?

Chartwell,

Ok, same questions for you? and in addition DID your e-mail connection EVER work? or did this just start happening? did you change anything?

Whatever e-mail service you are using needs to be configured for POP too, on THAT server, so make sure you have done that? Each service provider is different, but generally have good instructions.

I just conifgured a new POP account today after I brokedown and got my own domain, and it took me 3 tried to get it right in Outlook. Don't feel bad, Outlook is one of the most confusing peices to get
configured right, but it can be done. I'm more than will to help both of you, but please be specific about where you are, what you have, and what your seeing.

Regards,
cc

Hey, that's great Chartwell. Sounds reasonable.

It's good your provider was hepful.

Now Histonian's problem is something different. Best I can tell he switched from dial-up, but his Outlook is still trying to dial out.

Happy Outlook'ng

Thanks cc. But I gave up and phoned my service provider and was told that it resulted from a corruption of the dialer settings. The technical advisor had me delete these (I am not suggesting anyone else do that!) and re-enter the settings. For whatever reason the problem has gone away. Unfortunately, I am not gifted enough to explain the technical side of this to anyone! I hope someone else is smart enough to do that and help others with the same problem.
