Error 680: There was no dial tone

When I try to connect to the internet, there is no dial tone, and then a message pops up.  The first one is Modem Event Monitor: it asks me to please plug phone line into modem.  You can press ok and it will try to dial but then another message pops up this one says Error Connecting to VT Modem Pool:  Open port...  Error 680: There was no dial tone.  I have checked the phones lines, everything was working right last week, but now it's not.  Please help me.

Could be a bad RJ-11 telco interconnect cable between the modem and the telco wall jack. Could be something happened to the telco wall jack or in house wiring.

Connect a voice telephone to the wall jack and see if you get dial tone and it works OK. If it does, use the RJ-11 cord from the modem and connect it to the telephone to see if it still works - if not then the RJ-11 cable is bad.

If everything checks out OK then replug the RJ-11 cable back into the modem - make sure you get it in the correct "line" jack, not the jack for an extension voice telephone. Then see if it works now.

My Dad has this same problem with the Modem Event Monitor window opening up saying the phone line is in use. We have changed phone cords, tried different phone jacks, reinstalled the internet service provider software, talked to the ISP technical support twice, and they couldn't help, and still cannot get online. Every once in a while he will get online but not even every day. It still says the phone line is in use when it most definitely is not. Please help us with this problem. I believe it is a setting on the computer somewhere since we have tried everything else. Please help!!
