Error Code 39 - wireless internet issue

Question

I have a Dimension PC running Windows XP, and can't load the software for Belkin Wireless Internet. The computer won't recognise the CD in the drive. Called Belkin and downloaded a patch on my laptop, then onto memory stick and uploaded it onto the Dell. It goes through the set up wizard screens, then at the end I get the Error code 39 message about device drivers. The problem is that I can't go online on this machine to download anything.  I know there's a Windows tool that you can run (according to the FAQs), but wihtout being online, you can't access it. We just moved. In the old house, the cable plugged straight into this computer, then the router, so the issue never arose. Now, because of the way the cable is connected up, I can't have that set up again.The Dell therefore needs the wireless software so it can pick up the signal. It's the computer my kids use for homework, and If anyone has any ideas how I can get out of this loop, I'd really appreciate it - children back to school today and I'm beginning to tear remaining hair out ... A couple of things to try.

How to Fix Error Code 39 with DVD or CD-ROM drive in Windows XP/Vista Sometimes this will cause problems with other devices as well.

Your setup should look like...

Wall > ISP modem/router > Belkin > wired/wireless

If using DSL a DSL filter must be on all devices, phones, answering machines, faxes, etc..., everything except the DSL modem. You can share a DSL filter.

wall > DSL filter > splitter > multiple devices
