Error Code 70

I just received my dell computer ( Dimension 3000 - Celeron
Intel® Celeron® D Processor 320 (2.40GHz, 533 FSB), Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition)
on Monday. I have dial up service through my local telephone company. When I tried to log into the internet there was no dial tone. I ran modem helper and received the following error message: 70-Dial tone is present but modem cannot detect it. I have a 56K PCI Data Fax Modem. I checked both the phone cable and the phone jack for possible problems and found none.

After being on the phone with 2 seperate Dell people (who could NOT speak english to save their lives) for over 2 hours I finally got fed up and quit for the night. Any suggestions on how I could fix this. I need the internet to log into my work network so I can work from home tomorrow.

Hi

Did you have any lightning or thunder storm in your area recently?

First lets be sure the phone line is in the right slot if you are facing the back of the tower the phoe line goes in the left hand side

1 Do a   msconfig uncheck everything in the startup and then reboot and run the modem helper

2. IF the same error occurs open up the tower and reseat the modem into another slot

3 reboot and run modem helper again

"IF " you still get the error call up dell tech support .Tell them the exact steps you have done

And they will know what to do pronto :smileywink:
