I have a similar problem on my Inspiron 1000 but only when runnign on battery power - if I try to connect when powered by the battery, I get a remote computer did not respond message but if I just pluf the AC power in it connects first time - disconnect the AC power and dial up again and it fails - not got an answer to that and its only occurred int he last month or so but wondered if you had the same problem?
Hey thanx for the tip. I tried dialling up while using AC Power and was able to use the internet normally. I then dialled up using Battery Power but couldn't connect - got connected at 33.6Kbp instead of 46.6Kbps and got prompted to reconnect after 30sec. I then returned to dialling whilst on AC Power and got connected immediately. I wonder why this is so? Maybe I should ring Dell and ask them why this is so. Because what happens when I need to use the internet at uni and there's no power plug nearby.
Thanks for the reply and I'm glad you are able to get connected on AC power but as you say its not really a solution but without trying to sound nasty, its nice for me to know that somebody else has the same problem as me.
For info, I have two inspiron 2650s and only one has the problem - the other dials up fine on battery supplied power - the problem is definitely with the computer and not the battery - if I swop batteries on the machines I get no change - both batteries are fine on one PC and I cannot dial up with either battery on the other PC.
I have logged a call and got nowhere at the moment so if you could as well that would be good - any one else seen this kind of thing? - the only other thing I can think to check is whether any viruses may cause this type of behaviour.
Hey, I don't think it's a virus problem b/c I've run about 3 virus programs and no viruses found. I used Modem Helper (in Startup - all programs). With battery power it doesn't detect modem. With AC power it does detect modem. I think it's a modem issue maybe physically faulty. Would Dell likely send me a new modem?
Presumably I should just push this through my existing support call - unfortunately the item is out of warranty but is this an acknowledged design/build fault that would be covered even if I am out of warranty do you know?
Hey, I rang Dell about the problem about only being able to connect to internet using AC power. This is how it was solved.
1. Go to START UP >> CONTROL PANEL >> POWER OPTIONS
2. Under the "POWER SCEMES" tab, choose the "HOME/OFFICE DESK" option.
3. Next, go to "Under SETTINGS FOR HOME/OFFICE DESK" there are 2 columns: "Plugged in" and "Running on batteries". Don't change any settings under the "Plugged in" column.
4. You need to change the settings under the "Running on batteries" column. The settings should be set as "NEVER" for all four rows (i.e. Turn off monitor, Turn off hard disks, System standby, System hibernates should all be set as "NEVER").
5. Then unplug the AC adaptor and try connecting to the internet using battery power only.
The Dell technician said it was because my notebook (Dell Inspiron 5150) was defaulted to AC adaptor when it was made (or something like that). So I hope this solves the problem for you as it has for me. That way you won't have to send it in for servicing.
Good news for you and me - I got pretty much the same reply from my support call - under XP, control panel, power options, to change the values that you were told as well. I just changed mine off of the Max battery option to another scheme - the laptop one (can't remember the exact name) and it works fine now.
Minor gripe is that I was also told that downloading version A05 or later of the conexant modem driver should sort the problem anyway irrespective of the power scheme you choose and I have downloaded that A05 (latest I could find) version from dells web site and installed it but on Max Battery power setting dial up when on battery still fails so it doesn't seem to me that the driver update solves the problem completely.
However, I am happy with just not using the Max battery power scheme
