Error message

I keep getting the error message that "A duplicate name exists on the network" as soon as my computer enters windows. I don't know what this means or how to stop it. Any ideas?

Spurlin9,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

This could indicate that the network card's MAC address is a duplicate of another on your network.  It could also mean that your machine does not have a unique address or name on your network.

It means there is another computer with your exact computer name on the network.  Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Network Identification tab - Full computer name.  That is the name in question - it means you have another computer on the network maned exactly the same.  Click the Properties box and change the Computer name entry on the window that pops up.

FYI, Every card / network device has it own individual mac address there are no duplicates unless you have a clone feature for like maybe a router, even then the router has it's own mac address it just reports the cloned address when asked by the WAN connection. I agree with johnallg the computer name is the culprit...
