You shouldn't have to upgrade the desktop to Windows XP unless you are connecting the router by a wireless connection and you are trying to using WPA encryption.

If you disable Zone Alarm from running at startup, does the problem go away?

Thanks Steve for your reply.... I disabled zone alarm and rebooted.I get the following error message:
"zone alarm is trying to initiate the true vector internet monitor on your computer.cancel?"
The strange thing is sometimes zone alarm comes up,and sometimes it doesn't.
Any ideas?

Completely uninstall Zone Alarm until you get everything working without errors.  Once it works, try reinstalling Zone Alarm.

Yes the router will be your firewall.  Log into the router, WAN area, and turn off the ping answer ability.  Then go to www.dslreports.com/scan/ and scan your setup for holes - they will report if you are stealth or if some port is open.

John,
Thanks for your reply.
I tried to uninstall zone alarm...Now when I boot up I get the following error message"a required dll file vsnetutils.dll was not found"
The program is still listed in my add/remove programs, and in my program listing.
I beginning to have second thoughts about this router.....
Anything further you could suggest would be welcome,
Mike
