jan2565,

You should "run" the program from it's current location or "open" it.

jan2565,

When you reinstalled Windows 98, did you format the hard disk drive first?  If not, and if Windows XP is still on the system in some way, then the chipset installation utility will not function.

jan2565,

Boot your computer to your Dell Dimension Resource CD.  It should come up to an A:\> prompt.  At that point type in FORMAT C: and press .  It should warn you about losing all of your data.  Formatting will erase everything on the hard drive and let you do a clean install.  After the drive has been formatted, put in the Windows 98 CD and restart the computer.  Boot to the CD and follow the onscreen prompts to install Windows 98.  If you have a Dell Product Recovery CD for Windows 98 and it is purple, choose to format the drive and install Windows 98.  After the installation is complete, the system will restart and attempt to install drivers.  You should then install your Resource CD and install the chipset driver, and video driver first.  Then you can install the sound card driver, modem driver and ethernet driver if your system has a network card installed.  Then you can install all of your original factory applications.

SEARCH FIR THE BEST DRIVER FOR YOUR DEVICE and click NEXT.and so forth etc.....) so i tried to install the modem software drivers and utilites(this is the CD that came with the dell)drivers MDP3880-W(U)AZTECH DELL. there is not an option for installing windows98, only windows nt drivers. jan2565,

Congratulations on your successful reinstallation of Windows 98 on your computer.  Your modem driver can be downloaded from this link:

http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?cat=sup&subcat=sup/dyd&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&k=thr9xwor.exe

After downloading the file to your desktop, run it and it will extract itself to C:\Dell\Drivers\8644u.  It will then open a document with the installation instructions for the driver.

jan2565,

I do not know what may have gone wrong.  I would ask you if Device Manager already shows a modem installed in your system.  If so, remove it from Device Manager.  Restart your computer and when it asks where to find the driver for your modem, specify a location and put in C:\DELL\DRIVERS\8644U and it should find the driver for you.

jan2565,

Try downloading the driver file from Dell's file library.  The correct driver can be found at this link:
