Establishing An Internet Connection

I Have an Inspiron 530 with a Data/Fax Modem and a Wireless g card.  My wireless router is a DLink g router.  I replaced my old Gateway Desktop with the Inspiron 530 in my home office and set it up exactly the same way.  I have a cable broadband connection.  I've tried setting a connection using both the wireless and the ethernet but none seem to work.

At the bottom left of the task bar you can see that wireless connections are available and it shows my router but won't connect to it.  My xps laptop has no problems connecting.  With the Inspiron 530 it gives me an error message.  Like said in the beginning, nothing is setup any different than with my old desktop.  The ethernet cable is connected and the computer does recognize the wireless connection but won't connect.

Is your router set up with MAC Address Filetering (or something similar) that will only allow computers to connect if the MAC address of the network adapter is entered into the table of allowed MAC address on the router?

Wireless routers have security features that only affect wireless.  Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't trying to connect by wireless.   Did the computer you replaced connect by wireless?   Who set up your router initially?  Most wireless routers won't allow wireless connections until they are set up for it.  If your router works OK when you connect by ethernet, but won't connect by wireless, then wireless may not be enabled.   Try to give us a more complete picture of your setup and we may be to help.

I'm not sure what a MAC address is or how to configure the router.  I didn't have to do that with my last computer.  All I did was plug in the ethernet cable and it worked.

Hey thanks for your help.  While you were responding to the last post I was able to figure out what a MAC address was and correct the problem.  It's been two years since I set up my wireless router and I guess It just slipped my mind.  Thanks Again, Dave
