Eternet 10/100 Cnet
I need some advice on this one. My Desktop 8400 Dimension came with Network Ethernet 10/100 CNET Revis installed. I have it networked with a router from Comcast. The laptop and the downstairs desktop works but the 8400 will not connect to the net.
I am trying to figure out if the card is bad (but the other computers are connecting) or is there a virus in the 8400 that keeps it from connecting. How can I tell if I need a new card? What other things should I look for to determine the problem?
Thanks for your help
BTW I am on the laptop now (Awesome Studio XPS 1640)

meggie13,
Check your firewall/virus programs firsto make sure they allow this connection.

I did that and am in the process of doing a system restore to see if that works. The light on the card is blinking orange/yellow so I think that it should be working.

Meggie,
I would have tried, connecting the ethernet cable to the computer and restart the modem/router(s). Also restart the computer with the ethernet cable connected.
Second, try restarting the computer in the safe mode with networking(press F8 at startup when you see the Splash Screen).
What happens?

Rick, I can't get to the 100 wires in back of the computer but I did start it with trying to boot hitting f2 and the message came back no network boot available. Does that tell you something?
I do have a backup of the computer on an external hard drive from June. I would lose stuff but so be it. Nothing really important. All the docs are now on the laptop.
Should I try booting with the ghost cd and restoring that backup? Do you think it is a driver? MCafee del a bunch of things that it said was a virus. I wonder if a virus got into the computer and wiped out things for the network.
Also if I do the above will i be able to connect to the modem with the laptop?

Everything connected. Some things won't work on the computer. The hd is whirring and whirring. I finally am bitting the bullet and restoring the June backup which will take some time. I will let you know what happens.
I did the little computer and right clicked on it and did the fix. No go after that either.

Rick, I tried to setup a new connection and the computer just hangs. There is a little computer in the task bar that says it is connecting and the speed is as it always has been.
I tried going to run and typed ipconfig and also pinged which worked. Does this info help?

Meggie13,
Try right clicking on the l;ittle computer, left click diagnose and repair.
What happens?
Try running WinSock XP Fix and see if this helps.

Meggie13,
I hate to tell you this but you're going to have to check your connections first. Unplug the wires from the router to the wall and reconnect. Do the same for all the wires involved, it may be a lose connection. My friend at work said his cat was in the back of his when he lost internet.
The safe mode with networking would be the best way to connect first, as it doesn't allow some of the other programs to load.
What do you see in the device manager?
Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware update it and do a quick scan. Post back if it finds anything. I forgot, you might not be able to update it. Download it to another computer, rename the name of MBAB to something different, like gogetem.exe. If you have something on the computer, some have blocked the installation of MBAM.

Rick, THANK YOU for all your help and fast responses. I finally restored from ghost back to June and all works fine now. It had to be a virus since it would not even let Dr. start up.
Now to get the back from the laptop.

Meggie13,
I'd download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, update it and run a quick scan. I'd also do a periodic scan using it.
Glad you get it back working. :emotion-21:
