Sorry, but it's a bit difficult to give advice on an unknown computer. Also, is this the wired, integrated Ethernet port you are asking about, or is it wireless?

Also--the operating system makes a big difference in what advice we can give. If she has Windows XP, the Notebook or Desktop System Software must be installed first with the Chipset drivers so that the network and all other drivers can be installed.

Very good point JackShack.
If it is a wired Ethernet netwok card, whether onboard or add-on card, you may have a Dell disk with the drivers on it.
Check and see if you have one and if so, go into the Control Panel, Device Manager, and look for a Network adapters.
Expand the Network adapters, and see what is listed.
Then doubleclick on the network adapter and then Update Driver.
When the Windows opens, do not search automatically, but instead do a manual search, and look in the optical drive where the Dell Driver disk is, and locate the proper driver for the network adapter.
If all goes well, the network card should then be working.
You may have to reboot to load the drivers and enable the network device..
Hope this helps.
