ethernet cable not recognized

i have a dimension 4600.  i recently upgraded my internet to cable modem.  when i installed the modem the computer does not recognize the ethernet card or cable anymore.  in device manager the network card has a question mark, and there are no driver details.  i was able to get the modem to work through USB 2.0 which i guess is fast enough.  but i plan on adding a wireless router in the near future.  is there any way to make the cumputer recognize the network card so when i go wireless i will work appropriately

Go into Device Manager and remove the network adapter.  Reboot and let Windows redetect the card and reinstall the drivers.  See if that fixes the problem.

Are you sure you have the correct cable plugged into the network card and the cable modem and that it is a good cable?  Have you tried resetting the cable modem by turning off the computer and the modem, waiting for 5 minutes, then turning on the cable modem and waiting another 5 minutes for the modem to synchronize with the network, then turning on the computer?  Are the TCP/IP properties associated with the network card set to obtain an IP address automatically?

To add to Steve's comments, make sure you have a Regular CAT5 cable and not a Crossover cable.

Does your cable modem really show up in Device Manager?  (it shouldn't unless it is a USB connection).  Did you install any software for the cable modem? (you really don't need any unless it is a USB connection).  Please clarify.  You did mention that you used to connect to the modem through USB.  Try uninstalling the USB software for the cable modem - perhaps the computer is getting confused thinking that it should be connecting through USB rather than ethernet.  You don't happne to have both the USB and ethernet cables plugged into the cable modem at the same time do you?

tried the turning everything off. no effect.  the cables were what came with the cable modem.  checked all the connections and settings.  tcp/ip is automatic.  device manager says both my intel card is working along with the cable modem.  also have noticed a huge decrease in windows speed since i connected the cable modem, especially when booting.  cant seem to find anything in startup to be causeing the delay though.  tim

initially i didnt connect the usb or install the software for the modem.  i just plugged in the ethernet cable.  after that didnt work i plugged in the usb.  windows of course detected and installed the cable modem.  i have since also updated the cable modem drivers also.  also updated my intel network adapter drivers.  which the network adapter didnt even show up in device manager until i apdated the drivers.  now in device manager there is not even an ethernet connection showing.  under network adapters i have both the webstar cable modem, and the intel network connection.  both show that they are working properly.  the windows slow down i mentioned earlier also had nothing to do with the modem it was office xp sp3.  should i try a differnt modem maybe the ethernet on the modem is not working right.  tim

Again, you cannot get it to work if both the USB and ethernet cables are plugged in to the modem.  Unplug the USB cable, remove the modem software (which is not required for an ethernet connection) and if the network adapter is detected in Device manager, reset the modem by turning off the computer and the modem, leaving the modem off for five minutes, turning the modem on, waiting 5 more minutes for the modem to synchronize with the network, then turning on your computer.

ok this is wierd.  rebooted, had only the ethernet plugged in, and nothing.  plugged in the usb cable, and nothing.  plugged in the ethernet along with the usb and it works.  now the crazy thing, i unplugged the usb and the ethernet cable is working fine now.  we will see what happens next time i reboot.  if nothing else i will just leave both cables plugged in .  though that shouldnt work.  thanks for all your help.. i really appreciate it steve... tim
