maggie,
I seriously doubt that you would notice any difference between ethernet and USB, but if you insist on trying it, any PCI 10/100 ethernet network controller should work. You can find them for less than $10 after rebate and your local computer store and perhaps even Walmart.

Hey I was able to get it to work, 1.) go to safe mode, then go to control panel ADMINISTRATIVE tools I went into services(local) and checked to see that items that are related to networking were on automatic. Network...connection,DDE,DDE DSDM and NETWORK LOCATION AWARENESS. Rebooted
Returned to Control panel and clicked on add hardware and the wizard came up, it set up ehernet and I was in business, reinstalled cable router.
Note that I unplugged ethernet connection before I started this today. I am not sure if that is and issue or not.
This is a pain! I wonder if Dell tech support reads these, maybe they could put out better instructions or have a download that would help individuals set up the computer in an easier fashion. I am not an expert but have patience. Not many people can spend eight hours our more trying to redo their computer. I hope this can help some of the other folks.

maggie, it appears that an integrated nic was optional on your model. are you sure you didn't get one? ;p
I'll echo steves point and say that any ethernet card will work. Most of the cheap ones use realtek chipsets, in which case you'll want to get the drivers from realtek's site and not from whoever made the card. Post the card information once you buy one and we will help you get the latest drivers.
You model has USB1.1 which is rated up to 11mbps I believe. Unless there are a lot of other devices sharing the bus, that's still going to be more than sufficient for your internet connection. That said, I still think ethernet is the better option in terms of stability. CPU usuage will likely remain about the same as cheap ethernet cards will depend heavily on the CPU (like USB networking does). You should buy a cheap card though (free after rebate if you can find one), the benefit you will receive is not worth spending more
