Is it possible that an electrical surge caused your modem to fail and also caused your network adapter to fail. This has happened to me twice due to lightening strikes.
Actually, there was a lightning storm. But nothing in the house went out, and the computer and modem was protected (or so I thought) by a high-ended surge protected (which didn't trip or anything). However…the phone line itself wasn’t in the surge protector (I never thought about doing that!).
Does that mean my network card is possibly fired or something?
If the modem was fried by the electical disruption, then there is a chance that the network adapter was fried too. The simplest and cheapest way to check this is to purchase and install a PCI ethernet network adapter (you should be able find one for ~$10). Note that since you have a 4600C with a small case, you will need to find one that is designed to fit in the small computer. If the new network adapter works, then you know the integrated network adapter was fried.
