Im a bit confused here. Are you trying to be wireless or wired? For wireless the modem needs to have a wireless function or you need a wireless router.

You can use nslookup to try resolving the domain name or URL, see whether it works. If it does not work, then you won't be able to access Internet website by using IE. It might due to invalid configured DNS servers or no DNS servers configured on computer. You can try to use following free DNS servers provided by OpenDNS, see whether it helps..

Ok so you are currently wired and you wish to go wireless. Again if your modem is not wireless capable then you will need to get a router. you will also need to get some type of wireless adapter either as a plug in card or a USB adapter

Hello,

You all seem to be missing the point. My problems started when I installed a Wireless LAN Cardbus PC Card in order to go wireless. The ethernet was working fine but as soon as the software for the wireless card was installed the ethernet connection stopped working. I removed the wireless card software but the ethernet connection will still not work although the usb connection is fine. Whilst ethernet is connected I can get my virus updates and also updated ad-aware. I checked the diagnostics in internet explorer and it reports that my internet connection is ok. I checked my DNS client and found it was disabled so enabled it, also did a repair on the LAN connection but unable to get on the internet. Also although Yahoo is my default browser when connected by ethernet and trying to go into Yahoo browser it trys to fire up Internet EXplorer instead and then Navigation is cancelled I go back to USB reset the default back to Yahoo and everything is ok. Not really bothered about wireless now BUT would like to connect by Ethernet because it was quicker.

Hope this clarifies

Have you already reinstalled the driver for the integrated network adapter?  If not, the latest one is available here.  If nothing else, you might consider reinstalling the chipset software and then the network driver.  While I don't know if it will help it all, the chances of it causing things to get worse is extremely small.

I have reinstalled the dell driver but still no joy. I have set the ethernet connection to obtain an isp automatically but still fails to connect although it does not show navigation cancelled each time, sometimes it just bounces back to desktop screen. Also seems to have stopped changing default browser.

Hello, Thanks  to everybody for their replies. I have managed to cure the problem by RUN CMD and ipconfig/release. It now works fine.
