It sounds like you didn't install the Chipset Drivers for the D500 first when you reinstalled XP. That's based on the fact that the missing device is an integrated network adapter, on the motherboard.
I don't remeber the order by which I installed those drivers. But I am sure I installed the Chipset driver. Must I install that driver at the very beginning of my installation of all the drivers?
The reinstall guides that I've looked at all suggest installing the chipset drivers first. But people have had good success removing adapter drivers that didn't get installed after the chipset drivers, then rebooting, and letting XP discover them. Try that for the misidentified Ethernet adapter.

The Dell technical support told me these drivers and after I installed my Latitude D500 worked well.
