Ethernet Controller Driver - Other Devices

A while ago I reinstalled my op system on my desktop. When I did, I didn't have hard wired internet access, so I didn't worry about the Ethernet Controller. Now, my wireless adapter is beginning to fail and I have an Ethernet cord ready to replace it. But it won't accept it, I looked for the Ethernet Controller driver and it's listed under "Other Devices" and has a yellow "?" over it. Under properties it won't tell me its make or manufacture. Can you point me to the right driver, I looked and I'm not quite sure what I need for this. I have a Dell Desktop with Windows XPHome Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 3.

Thanks.

hi. i have an inspiron 14r(n4010). i recently updated my os from windows 7 ultimate to windows 8.1 , now i can't seem to find my ethernet driver. no ethernet driver is placed in device manager. tried to download the drivers from dell website, installed them but to no avail. the driver that was suggested for me was http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/in/en/indhs1/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-14r?driverId=D1KK4&osCode=W764&fileId=2731092731&languageCode=EN&categoryId=NI . however after installing it, install wizard showed error.

Power down the system. While powering it back up press F2 at the Dell BIOS splash screen. Change the BIOS settings to disable the integrated NIC/Onboard LAN controller. Let Windows 8.1 load.

Power down and repeat, this time enabling the NIC, does Windows now see it.

See here for guidance its to do with SATA drivers but you can see how to get to this setting also.

Also ensure that your system BIOS is at the latest revision:

If it doesn't display in the device manager as far as Windows is concerned the Ethernet doesn't exist and hence no driver will install.

If enabling/disabling it done nothing then try updating the BIOS to the latest version. If that doesn't work it suggests the  hardware is defective. You should run the F12 preboot diagnostics:

I also have the same problem as the other two. Here is the picture;

Hope you can help, the only place I could find 'drivers' were unreliable websites.

The previous posters did not have the same system or the same OS and it is likely you system and/or OS is different.

What model laptop do you have?  What OS are you working with?

Looks to be a Realtek RTL8168C LAN. Model of Dell and OS will help as mentioned.
