ethernet driver help

i have an inspiron b120 notebook and i'm trying to install dsl on my computer. I can't install it because my computer cannot detect an ethernet adapter eventhough it already has one?
how do i install it? whenever i try to install it, it tells me it cannot find the software for it. what should i do?

when i go under device manager, there is no network adapters. but when i go under other devices, ethernet controller shows up with a yellow question mark next to it.
i guess i need to get it reinstalled. but when i try to reinstall it, it tells me it can't because it doesnt have the software for it.
how can i reinstall it?

If you open Device Manager and expand the listing for Network adapters, does your ethernet network adapter show up there?  Have you recently reinstalled Windows on this machine?  If so, did you install the chipset drivers, notebook system software and drivers for the ethernet network adapter?

You don't say whatever it is you have done, so it is difficult to help.  Did you install the chipset drivers before even attempting to install any other device drivers?

well steve,
more info may have been helpful but i wanted yous to have to figure it out like dell expects us to.
yes you're right, the chipset drivers need to be done before anything else. the really stupid part of this whole deal is the fact that none of these drivers were on the recovery disks. how am i supposed to go download them when i can't get online to get them?
there product have gone way down hill since the first one i bought about 7 years ago, we won't even go into there customer support, and recovery disks that don't have the necessary drivers to recover..

it will be my last dell "dude" :smileytongue:

All I can say is that if you reading this forum, you have access to the internet.  If you have access to the internet, then you download drivers.  All you then need is a memory stick or CD-R to copy the downloaded files and move them to the problem computer.  I'm sorry if this takes too much thought.

not sure why someone with 32000+ posts would throw in the "thought.." comment.
if i made this personal steve i'm sorry, never meant it that way. just voicing my opinion.
ofcoarse someone with 5 pcs in the house can easily get what i need and transfer it via cdrom.
but what about the guy with only one pc that decides one day "i'm gonna reinstall windows today " without a worry in the world because he's got the "recovery disks".

maybe more than my opinion (which really means squat in the grand scheme) i hope someone stubbles by this post and can avoid the headache. that's all
thanks for the help steve. :smileywink:
