ethernet pci card

About 6 months ago I tried to install a Dynex 10/100Mbps ethernet card. At that time I had high speed cable internet service connected from their modem throught an adapter to a USB port.  I wanted to free up the USB port and the ethernet adapter was subject to failure from any electrical surge. Anyway after rebooting a blue screen came on and said something about Windows needing to check it's files. I uninsalled the card and forgot about it due to my cable company replacing the modem with one that does not need the adapter.
Now I am considering getting Yahoo DSL, save some bucks, but I will need a ethernet pci card or it's back to the ethernet USB adapter.
    I have a Dimension 8200 with a 850 chipset motherboard. I don't think it supports a LAN connection.
So what would be a good  card for this computer. I've noticed some say they are  Windows XP approved,  which is my OS.

Any of the major brands will do.  D-Link, Netgear, and Linksys and are more affordable.

I just got a D-Link DFE-530tx+ card at Office Max. It is identical to the Dynex card. The only difference is the installation guide for the Dynex says to plug in the network cable before booting the PC up after installing the card. The D-Link says nothing about the cable.
