ethernet plug

I recently purchased a Dimension 8400 and am trying to connect to SBC Yahoo high speed access. I have set everything up and my high speed service starts tomorrow. I have a Broadcom netXtreme 57xx device with a 1394 adapter. The SBC CD  instructs to NOT plug the Ethernet cable into the network outlet on the back of the computer. But this is the only place that the ethernet cable will fit.  Can anyone verify that this is the right place to plug ethernet cable or do I need to get another piece of equipment?

"The SBC CD  instructs to NOT plug the Ethernet cable into the network outlet on the back of the computer"  Strange, because nearly all network adapters have a plug on the back of the computer.  Are you leaving something out here?  How does SBC expect you to connect to their modem if you can't plug it in to an ethernet port on the computer?  Is the modem a USB - only modem?  There must be something else here that you are not telling us.

More than likely it said, do not plug in the ethernet side until you have finished installed the modem for the service, which is typical for DSL.

perhaps the modem you are trying to use is set up to be connected to your computer using a USB cable instead.  for that you may have to purchase and new cable, most computers don't come with any USB cables or you have to pay extra when really you could just go to the store and get it for much cheaper.  good luck
