Ethernet port not working.

I'm having the same problem as Veronica...My internet will now work through the ethernet port...only a USB. I too am trying to set up a router that requires the ethernet connection.  IT says the cord is not plugged in. I have tried three cords and it still says that.  I have downloaded the latest driver. I have an XPS 410.

can you check if the card is enabled or detected on the device manager..

and make sure that your not using the usb at the same time..

you also check the link lights on the ethernet port itself.. :smileywink:

I belive you mentioned in your other post in the XPS board that this quit a while ago.

Do as the previous poster suggest, check device manager for any ! or X next to the adapter listing. Look in the bios to make sure it is enabled. look at the staus lights where the cable plugs in. if they are working then there might be a software issue. If not the adapter might be bad.

Also try this Power down everything computer and modem. unplug the modem and wait about 3 min. Then with the modem off and the computer off connect the cable between the computer and the modem. Power on the modem. Wait another 3-5 mins for all the lights on the modem to come on. Then power on the computer and see if it connects.

one more thing is to open the network connections and make sure that the LAN or local area connection listing is enabled.

Again if all this fails then the possiblilty is good that the adapter(NIC) is bad. If so I would suggest getting an inexpensive addin PCI NIC. you can usually pick on up for betweeen 10-20 dollars.

Yes, this problem did start a while back. My internet went out and I had to call for service. When they came out, they thought it was the box and switched it out. That didnt work so they tried to connect with a USB cord. That worked and they said they believed something was wrong the the ethernet device.  I was able to work on the internet so I let it go (dummy that I am:)) Now I am trying to use a router and need the ethernet connection. I have been working on this for the past few hours. In device manager, it says it is working properly.  It does say it has a usb connect, which is how I am on line now. Under that it list the driver for the ethernet connection.  Both are enabled.  There is one area that is not enabled called "flow control". I wasnt sure if I should enable that (something about RX or TX or both).  As far as lights go, I see no sign of light in the back of my computer where the cord connects.  Is this where there should be light?  Why would it tell me it is working properly and then say plug in the cord if it does not work?  I tried the power down thing, didnt work.  Thanks for the suggestions.  Can I get the addin at wally world (Wal Mart)? Also, do I have to open my computer and put it in or is it an external device?  I'm not to sure where to put it in my computer...Got to love all this technology!!

You might find one a wallyworld. Just as for a ethernet PCI card. Yes you will have to open the case and install the adapter.

This is an example of what one whould look like.

Here's some info on how to open your system and add a card.
