External Phone w/Answering Machine Question

Question

I would like to use a separate external phone with answering machine connected to the 'out' port on my modem(BCM V9256K). I would also like to send and receive faxes on my computer. Is there a  modem/software/switching device tthat will differentiate between an incoming phone call or fax automatically and either receive the fax on the computer or route the call to a message on the external phone with answering machine.? Am I correct in assuming XP won't do this? I don't have a separate fax /phone line or number. The phone line is dedicated to my modem for sending/receiving faxes using the built-in XP Fax Server (Fax Console)and use of external phone only . I have a broadband connection for internet service thru the NIC. I do not want to use the phone/voice mail software on the computer. I think this is impossible with my my current setup unless I'm missing something.If I enable XP Fax Console to 'Recieve Fax' , it answers all incoming phone calls(fax or not).I cannot find info that says XP or the modem will do ths switching. Do I need a different modem and/or software/ or a switching device? Is there anything on the market to do this? Any recommendations greatly appreciated. My setup : Dimension2400 w/BCMV92 56K modem, XP Home,Canon RX500 Printer/Scanner,Broadband cable modem connected to NIC

Steve: Thanks for the reply. I found exactly that type of device at the store (Office Depot)where I bought my printer. Luke (really super knowledgeable , no-b/s 'geek' that sold me the printer), listened for about 2 seconds,turned and handed me a ComSwitch 5500  ($69.95). Came home ,plugged it up &... Bingo !!  back in business...
