File and Print Sharing Woes
I recently upgraded to Windows XP SP2 for both my Dimension and Inspiron. After examining the settings repeatedly, I am stuck. I can neither find my network printer nor find shared folders on the Dimension from my Inspiron. The Dimension has a wireless router which I use for internet access on the Inspiron, and the internet and wireless connection are great. However, when I try to add a network place or printer, it never can find my Dimension when I expand the Workgroup folder. However, the Dimension can easily find itself and the Inspiron's shared folders if I want to add it as a network place. My firewall settings are the same for both computers...Can anybody help?

What are your firewall settings? Is file and printer sharing checked off as an exception on the exceptions tab of the Windows firewall? Are you running any third party firewalls?

Is file and printer sharing enabled on both computers? Have drives and/or folders been designated as shared resources on both computers? Are the network names on both computers simple alphanumeric characters with no spaces? Are the computers in the same workgroup? Are you absolutely sure that you don't have something like Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Center running on either computer?

I am still having problems getting my Inspiron to find the shared printer on my desktop. I got a new printer--a Lexmark All in One, and it still can't find it on the microsoft network when I try to add a printer. No third party firewalls, and I've even tried temporarily disabling firewalls on both the inspiron and the dimension. I had success with this but since installing SP2 I've lost the ability to print from my laptop on the wireless connection. I've troubleshooted it to death where I resort to using Real VNC to print something via remote desktop when needed.
There must be something in the settings that needs attention, but I just can't see what is being overlooked...

Have you designated the printer as a shared device?

No I am really confused. You say that the "dimension desktop is the DHCP server with a Linksys broadband router attached to it". In this situation the desktop cannot be a DHCP server because the router is the DHCP server. You aren't using Internet Connection Sharing are you? Why do you say that the desktop is the DHCP server?

Ack,
I apologize. You are right...the ROUTER is the DHCP server. Sorry this thread can use as little confusion as possible.

What is the name of the workgroup as listed on the Dimension? What is the network name of the Dimension? From the Inspirion, if you go to Start > Search click on "Computers or People" and under "What are you looking for?" select "A computer on the network" and then type in the network name of the Dimension, what happens?
Can you ping the Dimension by its IP address from the Inspirion?
