There's alot there and the website is a bit disorganized. Can you be alittle more specific please?

I followed the steps in that tutorial. When I rebooted after changing the workgroup on the XP Pro machine (the laptop) I could not log on at all. It said "The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct" etc.. No matter what I tried I could not log on to that machine anymore.

Try booting into Safe Mode to see if you can change it there.

It sounds like you mistakenly set you computer up to be a member of a domain rather than a workgroup. On any computer that you did this on, go to Start > Control Panel > System and click on the Computer Name tab.  Then click on the Change button, and slect Workgroup instead of Domain.  Make sure all computers are in the same Workgroup.

I followed the directions exactly as they were given. But it's irrelevant now. I can't log onto the computer now so I can't get to the start button or anything else.

Nope. Couldn't get in with Safe Mode either.

I know what I did wrong.  I left out a detail in my original post that changes things and makes the process given at http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net.asp the incorrect process.  That detail is as follows:

The laptop is used at work and is part of the domain at the office.  Using the tutorial above moves the computer out of it's domain and messes things up.  I need to share the files at home without messing around with the domain setting.

PS - The logon problem was resolved by logging in as admin and doing a system restore.

Wow!  Well, that bit of information sure makes things different.  It sounds like you need a program called Netswitcher.  I don't know for a fact that Netswitcher will allow you to change between Workgroups and Domains, but it is worth a shot.  Since I have never done this and have no means of testing it, you will either have to start a new thread and find someone that is familar with moving back and forth like you are proposing to do.  Here's the link to Netswitcher:
