File + Printer Sharing

Hi all.
Im a newbie to Dell and a newbie to wireless networking, so please bear with me.

I have an Inspiron 6000 with an Intel Pro 2200 card and a PC connected via an ethernet cable to a Netgear DG834GT Wireless Router / Modem.

Ive managed to set up an internet connection on both machines via my router and have 'sort of' managed to enable printer + file sharing on my laptop to allow users of both machines to share certain files, etc.

The problem is, sharing doesnt always initiate automatically. I sometimes boot both machines only to find that [My Network Places / Entire Network / 'MS Win' Network / (My network name) ] doesnt show either network connection and I have to use the 'Search for computers' feature in the 'My Network Places' context menu.

Shouldn't both connections (computers) show up on the 'View Workgroup Computers' panel ? Neither do.

Any help greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

i never used any of those programs to share files or print. all i did was know the ip address to the desktop and the go to the laptop and do the following

start then run the do the following

\\ipadress number goes there.

you will get folders from your desktop there. click printer icon and install your printer drivers for your laptop. im not to sure about sharing files because i stopped doing that. anyone that messes with that command and puts in different numbers can see folders on hdd. as for printing its great. print from the yard or anywhere around the house. make sure that u r connected atleast 48mbps when printing. otherwise u will get a spooling or print not on network error. again u must be connected to the internet or your router wirelessly above 48mbps.

good luck

cyberdyne,

Most problems with file and printer sharing are caused by improperly configured firewalls.  On any computer running Windows XP with SP1, disable the Windows XP firewall. It will not allow File and Printer Sharing. On computers running Windows XP with SP2, make sure that the Windows XP firewall has File and Printer Sharing checked off on the Exceptions tab. If you are running any third party firewalls, like those provided by such programs as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Suite, make sure they are configured to allow local network traffic.  Most people forget that recent model Dell computers come with either the Norton or McAfee suites and that both contaiin firewalls. (I wish I could understand what Mr. troise was saying!)
