File Server Recommendations

Hi,

I wonder if anyone has any suggestions for me.

Basically I would like to set up a simple home network server that mainly serves as somewhere to store my files.

I don't really want to spend any (more) money on the system I have built for this, apart from on hard drives.  It is a P3 733Mhz with 96MB of RAM (Ha Ha - I am trying to get this up to 512MB by bidding for some on ebay), integrated graphics and, for now, an 80GB hard drive.

Does anyone know the best operating system I could use and the kind of results I might get?  I have tried to install the windows home server beta although it doesn't seem to want to play - then again the minimum memory requirements are somewhat higher than what i currently have.

I look forward to your suggestions - and yes before anyone says it I know the system would probably be better off in the bin but i like a challenge and I have owned systems with 486 processors so I refuse accept that this system is too slow to use as a simple file server!

XP Pro would server you very well.  You might google for Windows Home Server (it is in Beta right now).  I have a copy and think it is a little simplistic but for the average home user, it looks to be very sufficient.
