Your router is the firewall.   You will have to check with the "legal" file sharing site to see how to set your router's port forwarding settings to allow you to communicate with the site.  Perhaps if you told us the name of this "legal" file sharing site and the make and model of your router, someone here may be able to help you.

check to see if windows firewall is enabled or you may have a virus scan program that is using a firewall. you are connecting with a wireless connection so it is very possible that your wireless router has a built in firewall. you will have to check your virus scanner, check your windows settings to see if the built in firewall is enabled, and you will have to check the settings on your router. Your router will have an option to forward ports. Your virus scan and windows firewall will have an option to allow specific programs to bypass the firewall.

like volcano11 said, you need to find out what ports are being blocked by going to the website for the program you are using. The FAQ will have a section devoted to port forwarding.

I am on a wireless connection built into the laptop. I have no router. The file sharing program is lime wire pro. I have disabled the fire walls in mcafee and windows. the program still shows a firewall. The ISP does not block these programs, as i have had no problems with my old laptop using a wireless pci card. something is still blocking me.

Have you read the information on the Limewire support site:

Since you have the Pro version, you can also use the much more extensive Pro tech support site (I can't access it, but if you have a legal copy, then you should be able to.)

the router is the thing your laptop is connecting to access the internet it maybe a combination modem/wireless router. it has a firewall, you need to open the ports your filesharing program is using in that device.
