File Sharing

O.K. Volcano( I hope you are the one to answer this) Now that I have both of the computers up and running on the internet. How do  I open file sharing to be able to share printers and files and such. Oh yeah and I am going to tell you a little secret and you can't knock me for it...........The whole time you were confused as to why it says that I have a connection and I couldn't get on line...............I didn't know that I was online automaticly because I would try to connect to the internet through the way that I would without the router by double clicking my connection through efficient ethernet connection icon and it would tell me that the modem is allready in use. All I had to do is double click the internet explorer icon because I was allready online because of the router. Sorry I waisted all that time for a mistake as stupid as the one I pulled. But hopefully you aren't too mad and will help me set up file sharing.

As I recall from your previous posts, you have a desktop running Windows 2000 and a laptop running Windows XP.  Is that correct or are going to force me to back and read all of your other posts?  Windows 2000 complicates matters a little because I don't have much experience with it.

On each computer go to Network Connections, right click the network connection that is being used now by your network (wireless on the laptop, local area connection on the desktop) and select Properties.  Make sure that File and Printer Sharing is in the list of installed items and the box next to File and Printer Sharing is checked.

Next on each computer open Windows Explorer and select the drive and/or folder you want to share on the network, then select Sharing and follow the diaglog boxes through to enable sharing on each of these resources.

To share the printer, you need to open the Printers folder on the computer to which the printer is attached, right click the printer you want to share and select Sharing.  Follow the dialogs through, giving the Printer a name by which it will known on the network.

If the laptop is running XP, then it should eventually find the network printer and add it to the list of available printers.  If it doesn't eventually find the printer then we have more work to do, but let's hope it does for right now.

There may be some extra security settings that you will need to deal with with Windows 2000 (as I said this complicates things).   Still, if you you are running any third party fiewalls on either computer, you will have to configure them to allow local network access.

No, I have a dell Dimension 4100 desktop with windows 2000 professional, and an Hp a1520e desktop with windows vista. The dell is the one without the wireless network adapter, it is the one that is wired to the router.
