File Synching
Sorry, this is a double post. Originally posted on the XPS laptop forum then I realized their is a network forum.
I'm about to become a new XPS M1530 owner.
A question about networking. I have or will have an XPS M1530 with VISTA Premium (VISTA is new to me). I will connect the M1530 to the internet via a wireless router. My desktop computer runs XP and is connected to the same router by the ethernet cable.
Can I have a folder in each computer stay in sync (either auto or manual) with one another with this arrangement? If not is there a way to do this? I'm a photographer and can be loading and editing my pictures on either computer. I want both folders to be the same for convenience but also for backup purposes.
Thanks

You will need to share a folder on at least one of the computers, and set up networking between the two.
Microsoft has a program called SyncToy that you should try. I haven't played around with it that much, but I think it would be helpful for your situation.
The other alternative is to keep everything in a single, shared folder (perhaps on the desktop). I got tired of syncing between my laptop and desktop and now just keep everything on the desktop. My laptop is in effect a dummy terminal -- it has none of my work files on it. I just connect to the internet and then link to the desktop and access that shared folder (I have a VPN setup so I can do this over the internet, as well as from my home network). It's a lot slower than having the files stored locally, but it's also much less of a hassle.
Last point I'll make is, that if you're transferring a lot of files, wireless will be slow. A wired gigE connection may be worth looking into if you're moving a lot of data.
Good luck, post back with any questions.

Thank you so much NemisisDB. I will give this a try and see how it works when I get my laptop. I found the program you mentioned. It's a free download from Microsoft. Looks good.
Again Thanks....

Installed SyncToy. This has worked great. Does all I need it to do. I now have over 2000 files in 60+ folders synched between my laptop and desktop.
