File/Printer Sharing problems

Okay, well here it goes...

I just recently set up a wireless router (Linksys WRT45G)with current firmware. I have my desktop pc (windows xp home sp2 avg antivirus) hardwired to it and my laptop (winxp sp2 symantic antivirus) wirelessly connected to it. I used the network connection wizard on both computers to enable file and printer sharing as well as making them part of the same workgroup. The only firewall i have installed is the windows firewall. Both computers have File/Printer sharing on the exceptions list. Both have the file/printer sharing and network tools installed.

Now the problem is, I can see and access the shared folders on my pc with my wireless laptop, however the opposite won't work. The laptop's shared folder won't even show up in my pc's network places, however by exploring and going through some folders i managed to find the laptop, but when i double click on it i get a message saying that it could not be accessed. This really puzzles me because the connection works in one direction yet not the other. I would prefer a solution that doesnt involve disabling ALL firewalls, since I have a dsl connection that is always on.

Any insight?

and if it means anything, when i run the network setup wizard on my laptop it informs me that a network cable is unplugged and asks if i want to continue anyway. i doubt it but is it maybe configuring a network assuming i will be hardwired and not using a wireless connection? i don't know, just brainstorming possible reasons.

ps tried to access the shared files with my laptop's windows firewall turned completely off and no dice. could there still be remnants of my symantec antivirus on here messing stuff up?

nope the desktop still can't ping the laptop. what is interesting though is that itunes on my desktop can see the shared library on my laptop but can't access it, just like the shared folder. the desktop can detect the laptop but for some reason is denied access to the laptop.

More than likely there is, so I would search on the Symantec site for a file named RNAV.exe (Remove Norton AntiVirus)  No problems with the cables is they can see each other.

This has to a be a firewall issue.  Are you using different account names on the two?  If so make sure you have the same account name that has full access.

by account name do you mean user name?  if so, i havent been using the same user names when trying to access the shared folders.  is there any way to do this without using the same names or is that pretty much necessary?

Yes user names.  However you can use the "Everyone" Account and giev what access levels you deem necessary.

Start with Full Access and then back down to Modify.

where do i find the everyone account and where do i give access?  that account doesnt show up on the login screen (im running winxp home btw if that makes a difference)

See my first post in this thread.  There are four links and what you need is in each of those on how to do what you just asked.

the only thing i can find about other users is how to log onto the administrator account; is the process the same to log onto "everyone"?

and the only thing i can find about permissions is in simple file sharing, which doesn't appear where it should on my laptop.

sorry that its taking so much for me to understand whats going on with this

Forget the users applet and simple File Sharing.  Right click the C Drive and go to Properties.  First go to the Sharing Tab and make sure the Folder has been shared that you want to share.  A Hand will appear under the folder that has been shared.
This tab tell you who can actually create the shared or mapped drive within the network.  Now look at the Security Tab.  The "Everyone" permission is there be default so make sure that it has Full Permissions by putting a check mark in the box.
So, we have to issues here; Shares and Permissions.  The ability to create a share and then the ability to perform a function within the share.  Some can do anything, some can only read.  Everyone means everyone so be careful with this permission.
With XP Home you can only Share the "Shared Documents" folder but with Pro you can create shares as you wish.  Say you had a folder named Dell that was 5 levels deep within a folder named Temp on the C Drive and you wanted to share that folder.  If you wanted to map a network Drive to that folder from the desktop it would look something like this:

You would not need to put the entire hierarchy in the share name, just the beginning and end because the permissions given to the Dell folder would propagate up to the main folder named Temp.

So, we have Shares and Security with Permissions give to both.  If you can understand this principle, this is as about as hard as networking can get.

when i go to the properties of my c drive i only have a share tab, no security tab or anything else like that. in that share tab i have the option of sharing the c drive and then if i want to allow users to change my files. thats all. there is nothing about permissions for specific users. is this because i have home?

thanks for all the help you are giving me, sorry its being difficult

This is because you are using Simple File Sharing, which I thought you said you were not.  Anyway, go to My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View
Scroll all the way to the bottom and uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing".

The Security Tab will now appear.

thats the thing; i went to my comp -> tools -> folder options -> view, and simple file sharing is not listed checked or unchecked.

Then both versions have to be XP Home unless you have some sort of malware which has deleted the file.

You really need to start over, delete all shares, etc and do this again MANUALLY.  The wizard (can't understand why they call it that) has done something screwy.

Just to verify:

No third party firewalls should be running(the Windows Firewall will autoconfigure with SP2)

No other security programs running

Make sure that File & print Sharing is enabled on both Network Adapters

The only Folder you will be able to share will the Shared Documents Folders because this is XP Home.

yeah there has been no malware one my comps, both versions are xp home sp2, and the desktop had just been given a clean install and yet it too is missing the simple file sharing option as well as the security tab

XP Home with have no option to switch from Simple File Sharing therefore NO Security Tab.  So forget about these two features.  You have only simple File Sharing by default.
