going to satillite internet

I'm going to change from dialup to satillite and my biggest problem is that i'm hooking up 4-5 computers. I called and got info from dway and they said i would need to get a router either wireless or otherwise. if i go wireless will i need to buy something to put into each computer to recieve the signal? I'm going to be hooking up the computers in two trailer houses both are 80 ft long and are about 120 ft apart. They are end to end. can anybody help me with ideas.

if all of your satellite service comes through a single box that can connect to a router via ethernet, then you're in relatively good shape.  Some satellite services are only download through the sat link and upload via a phone link.  We'll assume you have the former and not the latter.

you're also a bit confusing on how many computers and where.  I'm going to assume two computers in one trailer.  the local trailer will be the one with the sat box.  the remote trailer will be the other one.

So you attach the satellite box to the router via ethernet.  Most routers will have 4 local network ports (and a fifth port for the wan/interrnet connection).  A wireless router will have these four ports and an antenna or two.

There are three parts to your network.  (1)You need to connect the computers in the local trailer to the router.  (2)You need to link the local and remote trailer.  (3)Lastly, you need to connect the computers in the remote trailer.

Each part can be handled by either wires or by wireless -- and you're free to mix and match based on factors which you can best determine.  Are the computers in each trailer clustered?  If they are physically near each other, then wired might be the best option for parts 1 and 3.  If they are on opposite ends of the trailer then wireless might be better.

Concerning the link between trailers, wired is prefered but it will mean running a cable between the trailers.  This will cost time or money.  Wireless will definitely work but will take a bit more skill, be slightly less reliable, and will also cost some money.

So lets do a sample scenerio.  The computers in the local trailer and close together and near the satelite box and router.  The computers in the remote trailer are far apart from each other.  Lastly, you don't want to bury cable between the two locations.

In this situation you would buy a wireless router (we can discuss types later) with a removable/upgradable antenna (most have this).  You would connect the satellite box to the router (thus connecting it to the internet).  You would connect the two computers in the local trailer via cat5 ethernet cable to the router (each computer would need an ethernet card).

You would remove the stock antenna of the wireless router and attach a directional antenna.  You would aim this antenna at the remote trailer.  At the remote trailer you would have another directional antenna aimed at the local trailer.  It's worth noting that these antennas can be expensive or can be made out of a pringles can -- kinda up to you.  The antenna at the local trailer would be connected to a wireless to ethernet bridge.  The bridge in turn would connect to a wireless Access Point (which would be set to a different channel than the inter-trailer link).  This wireless access point would cover the remote trailer.  The computers within the remote trailer would need wireless cards to connect.

Change the above based on your situation.  If the computers in the remote trailer are clustered you forgo the second wireless AP and use a wired switch instead.  If you want to connect the trailers with cable you ditch the link and directional antennas -- you get the idea.  Post back with more specifics

Thanks that was a little bit helpfull. I am new to computers so the explanation you gave was inlighting. To clarify my situation a little, the 4-5 means that i am trying to hook up 4 desktops and 1 laptop. The computers are not grouped, they are on oppisite ends of the trailers.

Although this senerio might be mote. I might have all the comps. moved to one trailer.

So if that happens would wireless work better and would it be cheaper?

If the desk computers are in one structure, is there some reason not to just connect with Ethernet wires (other than the appearance)?
I assume you know about

I have learned much on that forum.

jackel, wired is always more reliable and easier to setup (once the cables are laid).  the problem with wired is usually the cost of laying the cable in a visually appealing way.  If you can easily string wires from each computer to the router/sat box, then go for wired.  If you cannot, then use a wireless router to cover the trailer with the sat box/router.

the same applies to the second trailer and the link that connects them.
