Good wireless connection - No Internet: a SOLUTION

If you are getting a good signal to your wireless network, the status shows packets being sent but not received, and you CANNOT get an Internet connection. The problem may ocur if you are changing ISP, changing modems, changing routers or changing internet service from DSL to cable.

In this case the change was from DSL to cable. The DSL service was provided by SBC Yahoo and was using a software that prevented the proper configuration of the router and prevented Internet connection.

NOTE: if the wireless computer was hard wired to the router, there was an Internet connection! Just the wireless wasn't working. All SSIDs, IPs, encryptions, etc., were set correctly.

The solution was to completely uninstall all the SBC and SBC Yahoo software from the computer prior to installing the wireless card and configuring the router. To uninstall the software, go to Start/Control Panel/Add Remove programs and select the SBC and SBC Yahoo programs for removal. Another good way to remove the software is to download a program called Add Remove Plus from www.download.com and remove the SBC and SBC Yahoo programs (it is a free trial for 30 days) Once you remove programs it is usually good to reboot the computer.

NOTE: we are refering here to the computer that is used to configure the router and is hard wired to the router and hopefully is the one that was connected to the modem before.

Now power down the system: 1) turn the computer off; 2) power down the router (unplug from wall and also unplug network cable); 3) power down the modem (unplug from wall and also disconnect network cable from the router AND disconnect from the wall (coax or phone lines). Let it rest for a few minutes.

Now power up the system: 1) connect the coax or phone cable back to the modem and plug in and wait for the proper lights to light up; 2) connect the network cable form the modem (first) and to the router. 3) plug in the router.

Turn on the computer (and turn all firewalls off!) and enter your router configuration program (usually by typing http://192.168.0.1 on your Internet browser.) Follow the instructions from your router manual making especially sure to choose the correct setting from: Your Network card or PPPOE or PPTP.

You should now be able to use your wireless connection, as long as all the settings in your network are good (SSID, IPs, encryption, etc).

Hope this helps!

For a quick reference, although not exactly the same situation look at this Netgear knowledge base article: http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101306.asp

The system we were networking:

Motorola cable/DSL modem
D-Link WI-624 router
Dell Dimension 4300 P4 1.6Ghz
Windows XP HE SP1
D-Link G520 network adaptor card

(we only had one computer in the network and had it hard wired with a CNET card as well as with the D-Link wireless card)
