I have an Optiplex GX1,that a friend was throwing out because they thought it was busted,it turns out that it is only the hard drive and the mother board and memory are all OK.At the moment my friend is using an older PC with no modem,USB's ect so,salvaging the dell is a very viable proposition and they would have a reasonable PC.Unfortunately this has left a bad taste as it is their first experience of computing and they are now a bit disillusioned.
I would like to add a 56k modem to the PC but there is not much info in the on-line manual, the PC is a mid size chasis, will any 56k data/fax modem do the job,as long as it is the correct size for the chasis? Also which slot on the riser board does it go into?
I was amazed when I had a look at prices of a new internal modem they start at £5. so that definately wont be too painful,ha ha.
Anyway any advise regarding fitting and purchasing ect will be greatly appreciated,I hope your all having a nice day,all the best....

There are Tons of Documentation online.
Nobody says particular 3rd party modems do or dont work in their documentation.
Any PCI Modem will work fine in the GX1 because its lowest speed is 266Mhz pentium2.
Most PCI modems require a Pentium1 166Mhz or faster and WIN98SE or higher.
WIN98SE,ME,2000,XP will clean install on a GX1 without needing any drivers.
Install the drivers for the modem BEFORE plugging it into a slot. It will not detect
properly or have problems if you install the hardware BEFORE installing the Drivers.
Hi Speedstep, thanks for your advice thats great news I must apologise for my late reply,I have been slightly dsitracted with the hard drive and OS,but I now have this end of the job under control, thanks very much for your advice re the modem and HDD,I hope your having a nice day,all the best..
